Flyweight fighter Chris Cariaso will join us at the Connection Rio HQ ahead of his next fight on May 18th in Santa Catarina, Brazil. He joins a long list of professional athletes who have chosen to use Connection Rio’s services when visiting to train in Rio de Janeiro.
A 125lb fighter from the Bay Area, California, Cariaso is a Strikeforce and WEC veteran with 6 fights in the UFC and a total record of 14-4-0. Originally from Arizona, Cariaso has trained Muay Thai since the age of 11 and owns one of the top Muay Thai gyms in American. He can be found in the gi and trains with UFC title challenger Gil Melendez and BJJ cult legend Kurt Osiander.
Cariaso will finish his preparations at the Connection Rio BJJ hostel in Rio de Janeiro before heading to Santa Catarina for his fight on UFC on FX 8. Supporting the main event of Vitor Belfort vs fellow American and Strikeforce veteran Luke Rockhold, Cariaso will face Brazilian Jussier Formiga. He had this to say about his opponent, talking to UFC.com: “I’m very excited for this fight. I think the contrast of our styles makes this a very intriguing fight. He is a very good grappler and has good striking. I have the defense to keep the fight standing, where I am much stronger. But if we go to the ground he will be threatened in every position.”
Connection Rio guests will be able to watch the event on TV at either Bar do Oswaldo (close to HQ house) or one of the other popular venues in Barra, such as Bar 399 (opposite our Olegario Maciel apartment).
