There is this common belief amongst the BJJ community that if you go to Brazil to train BJJ in Rio and travel to a famous academy that houses superstars it’s very unlikely, if not impossible, to roll with any of them. Well I’m here to tell you that’s wrong. During my short time here in Brazil I have had the chance to not only meet and learn under many BJJ superstars like Terere, Mario Sperry, Ricardo Viera, Jackson Souza, and many others, but also the opportunity to roll with them.
Training with legends of BJJ in Rio
Each time I’ve rolled with a superstar I have just been paired up with them during sparring rounds in class, I didn’t even have to ask. And if by chance you don’t get paired up to roll with them during class, they have all been incredibly welcoming to roll afterwards, you just have to ask!
Can you believe that? Honestly, I can still hardly believe it but I know it’s all true because I’ve lived it!
To top it all off every time I’ve gone out to cross train at famous academies the classes have been taught by a superstar. Every time I have visited Checkmat in Copacabana the class has been taught by Ricardo Viera, when I visited Terere’s it was taught by the legend himself, and whenever I go and train at Gordo’s he is there to teach and answer and question you may have. This is just a small taste of all the talent here in Rio and I am excited to discover more.
A big thank you to Connection Rio for all of these experiences I’ve had and the ones I will have in the near future. To say that this is a dream come true would be an understatement and to think that I will get even MORE opportunities like this in the future is incredible.—
