Thirteen Weeks in Rio de Janeiro
I am now back in England after a thirteen week stay at Connection Rio. I landed back in London exactly one week ago with quite a climate shock, from around thirty degrees to around ten. Now I have had chance to settle back into life I can look back at all that I gained from my time in Rio. I had such a great time in Rio, thirteen weeks meant that I really felt like I got into the spirit of the Brazilian lifestyle and my surroundings in Rio.
Rio itself is like no other city in the world, its full of life and music and chaos. Rio was everything I thought it would be from the pure white sand beaches and jungle covered mountains to bars and restaurants overflowing and people dancing in the street. And even though it was so different to where I am from I never felt out of place and I always had access to anything I could have got at home. One of the things I enjoyed the most was the people I got to meet, aside from all the Brazilians I got to know from training I also made great friends with people from all around the world, from Jordan to Peru, Japan to Canada, Norway to New Zealand. And the best part about it was how easy it was to get on with everybody, despite our difference in backgrounds, because of jiu-jitsu. Not to mention the way I feel my trip has changed my jiu-jitsu. Getting to roll with to so many black belts and so many high level guys day in day out has meant that my defence has really come along, not to mention the tips black belts give after each roll with them have proved invaluable and have really sharpened my game up, not to mention the sheer amount of time I got to spend on the mats.
The training in Rio is different to anywhere else in the world, with so many people training jiu-jitsu and so many black belts, not to mention getting to meet your heroes on the mats. From black belt or ADCC world champions, famous coaches and even big names in MMA. I loved my time in Rio and look back on every minute of it with fond memories. I have met so many people who I would call my friend at Connection Rio and who I hope to stay in touch with, I look forward to returning some day.
