The topic of training in the gi for MMA is a controversial one, but here in Rio UFC fighters still train in the gi, as we saw today.
At today’s seminar at Nova Uniao, TUF Brasil 2 winner Leo Santos and undefeated MMA fighter Yan Cabral held a joint seminar where they showed some cutting edge BJJ techniques in the gi.
“Here at Nova Uniao all MMA fighters are obliged to train in the gi three times a week,” said Cabral, explaining that the decree came from head coach Andre Pederneiras.
Even though the team are known as speciliasts in muay thai, all of the top MMA fighters are also black belts in jiu-jitsu, and Andre Pederneiras makes sure to keep the level of jiu-jitsu high in the gym so that his fighters are always prepared for when the battle goes to the ground.
The proof of Dede’s work is visible in fighters like Cabral’s record – 10 wins, all by submission, including an arm triangle victory over MMA legend Kazushi Sakuraba.
Yan was scheduled to return to action in next weekend’s Copa Podio competition here in Rio de Janeiro but has just signed to return to the UFC in October where he will fight David Mitchell on the undercard of Demian Maia vs Jake Shields in Sao Paulo.
