Polish BJJ at Connection Rio

In November-December 2011, Connection Rio hosted two of Poland’s best grapplers: Maciek Polok and Marcin Held.

Black belt Maciek and brown belt Marcin are an important part of the Polish BJJ community and both have fought internationally – Maciek represented Poland in FILA submission grappling championships and Marcin Held is an MMA fighter in Bellator (follow his career here).

Neither of them had been to Brazil and chose Connection Rio as they spoke no Portuguese, wanted to train at multiple academies, and didn’t want the hassle of trying to figure everything out when their focus and priority was on training BJJ.

While in Brazil the two trained at least two times every day, but still engaged in many activities such as surfing on Barra beach and cycling around Ipanema.

This video, made by Hywel of BJJ Hacks, documents their experience. They visited and trained at many BJJ gyms in Rio, and Marcin even competed in a local tournament, winning double gold (weight and absolute) and a cash prize in the brown belt division.
