Brazil is the birthplace of MMA, as it was from vale tudo that the modern sport of MMA developed. There are many MMA gyms in Rio including some of the most professional teams in the world. Training MMA is not as easy as jiu-jitsu, as gyms tend to be more private and not open to guests without the right connections.
Training at MMA gyms in Rio
Not all MMA gyms in Rio permit visitors to train, but those that allow guests from overseas include:
• Nogueira Training Center
• American Top Team
• Brazilian Top Team
• Renovacao Top Team (RFT)
and more… (Note: Nova Uniao does accept visitors and even sometimes fighters from other teams, but generally only with a personal recommendation)
Training is not suitable for novices and only recommended for advanced trainees or professional fighters. MMA teams are usually comprised of BJJ black belts, muay thai fighters and more. Unlike in the US or Europe, you cannot walk in off the street and start training MMA. You will be expected to have proficiency in striking and grappling (developed in stand-alone classes) before joining in the MMA training, as there is often little instruction and a lot of sparring.
When training at an MMA team in Rio it is advisable to have someone make an introduction on your behalf to clear up any doubts about where you are from and why you are there, and to negotiate training fees and so on.

The Nogueira Training Center alone boasts a team of over 70+ active professional fighters, while Nova Uniao regularly has 40 guys in a training session.
