Surfing and jiu-jitsu are closely linked. Pro boarders like Joel Tudor (a Carlson Gracie lineage black belt) and Kelly Slater, who has trained with Rickson and BJ Penn, are some famous examples of surfers who love to grapple.
The list of BJJ black belts who are keen surfers is endless: Rickson Gracie, BJ Penn, Royler Gracie, Sylvio Behring, and many more.
Surfing Rio de Janeiro
Eduardo ‘Teta’ Rios, who grew up in Barra close to our main location, is a keen surfer and has travelled the world surfing in places such as Costa Rica and Indonesia.
“I grew up two blocks from the beach and the lifestyle is about the beach, so it was no problem to almost everyday be in the water with all my friends. When training started to be more serious I had to make time to go to the water before or after training, but you always find some time during the day, especially in the good days of waves.”Teta once even surfed in the United Arab Emirates in the desert on an artificial wave: “That was a special session, we had the place only for me, Pedro Lott, Luca Atalla, Braulio Estima, Renzo and Kyra!”
He is one of the many BJJ’ers who enjoy two exciting lifestyles: jiu-jitsu and surfing. Him and many other BJJ black belts in Rio de Janeiro are keen surfers, and will often divide their time between the gym and the ocean!
