How Long to Stay & Train in Rio?

It’s seven in the morning and my alarm starts going ready to train at 8am, it would be easy to just hit snooze and go back to bed but that’s not what I come to Rio for! I came to Rio and Gordo JJ to make the most of every day and every hour I can get on the mat and I think it’s important to have this mentality if you are serious about improving your skills.

This blog is written by Connection Rio sponsored athlete Lee Wright. He blogs weekly on life and training BJJ in Rio.

Sometimes your body does need rest but you can still go down to the gym and watch the technique of countless top black belts and learn some new things just by watching or asking questions – basically what I am saying is don’t waste or take a lazy approach to training, you never know if you will get the same opportunity again.

Many people wonder how long to come to Rio for and what would be a good amount of time required to improve your BJJ. I have seen people stay anything from 2 weeks up to a year. It really depends what your goals are and on your work / family commitments back home.

I think 2 weeks is a good amount to hit 2 training sessions at a day, enjoy the beach, and do all the tourist stuff and get a feel for what Rio is like, but I don`t think its long enough to make any dramatic changes in skill level.

If you are serious about improving or changing parts of your game then anything between 1 – 3 months is a good amount of time to visit, this gives a chance for your body to adjust to the heat and intensity of training and also time to see what areas of your BJJ you need to work. I have also found the longer you stay the more you will get to know the guys at the gym, they will see your serious about training and will more than likely help you and give you advice and feedback on a regular basis.

If you are planning to come to Connection Rio for a longer period of time I think it’s good to set some clear goals of what you want to achieve otherwise it is easy to slip into a pattern of missing training and not really working towards anything. Obviously there is much more to Rio than the inside of a gym but if BJJ is what brought you to Rio then stay focused on it!
