Kyra Gracie 2012 Documentary: Soon to be released

Kyra Gracie documentary soon to be launched from the combined effort of Journalist/film maker Hywel Teague and talented film maker Stuart Cooper (Stuart Cooper Films). After the release of BJJ Hacks’ first short film on Kyra Gracie (KYRA GRACIE UNCOVERED) viewers have been waiting for an encore. In having teamed up with one of the best up and coming film makers around, Stuart Cooper, their final cut has very high expectations.
I have had the pleasure of viewing a fair amount of footage shot for the documentary and truly enjoyed it! This work is an excellent way for those who are unfamiliar with Kyra or her contributions through her social outreach project Instituto Kapacidade to learn.
Although the release date for this much anticipated film has yet to be announced (expected End/March) it is just around the corner.

Very much looking forward to the release of another success by BJJ Hacks and Stuart Cooper Filmes.

BJJ in Chicago’s Jiu-jitsu Gi drive

Connection Rio is proud to help sponsor BJJ in Chicago’s kimono drive for those in need.

In January of 2012, BJJ in Chicago asked people to donate gis they did not need and over 50 gis where collected, a great response from the BJJ community.  Currently, they have well over 100 gis and will have more before they are done collecting. After a tremendous amount of research the calculated cost is a great deal of money for these gis to get to their destination.  BJJ in Chicago need help in transporting the kimonos here to Brazil and have set up a fund raiser to make sure these donations reach their destination in Brazil.
There is a list of perks that are available for different donation amounts on BJJ in Chicago’s site, including limited edition items only for Gi Drive donors, and other perks donated by some amazing individuals and companies.
They have also put together a few premium perks for people who feel as passionate about this project as BJJ in Chicago do.  Donating money is a gratifying feeling in itself, but they … Continue reading

Connection Rio BJJ Camp, Rio de Janeiro

Connection Rio BJJ Camp, that is how the Connection Rio hostels are often referred to by those who have yet to visit. Is CR a camp in the sense that all of your activities are pre-programmed and your hand held, no. How about CR being a camp that hands you a daily schedule to adhere to, the answer is also no.We do however cater to BJJ camps from abroad through accommodation at the Connection Rio hostels.
In essence Connection Rio is a BJJ Camp, by fact that the majority of guests train or end up training Jiu-jitsu during their stay. CR may also be categorised as a BJJ Camp from the general good moral in training and making the most of time here in Rio de Janeiro among guests. Regardless, it is important to know that Connection Rio is a BJJ hostel providing all of the options that a BJJ Camp has to offer and more. CR gives each and every guest an opportunity to explore the city on their own, without a pre-set itinerary as to what they will be … Continue reading

Travel times to BJJ clubs around Rio

There is so much BJJ in Rio it’s untrue. By no means does everyone who stays at CR train at the nearby Gordo Jiu-Jitsu. But most first-timers to Rio choose Gordo’s because getting around is a little tricky if you’re not an experienced traveller, speak a little Portuguese, or just confident in your ability not to get lost.
Once you’ve been here a short time, you’ll find the public transport system pretty straight forward. You may want to explore the city and visit other academies. If so, here is a quick list (by no means exhaustive) of well-known BJJ academies with travelling distance of the CR houses in Barra da Tijuca.

Gordo’s – 1 min away, walking
Barra da Tijuca has many gyms, such as Gracie Barra, Akxe Jiu-Jitsu, Tata’s etc – between 15-20mins away, via bus and/or walking
Recreio has X-Gym (powerhouse MMA and BJJ gym with 7th degree Sylvio Behring teaching BJJ there), a GFT academy and more – around 25-30 mins away, via bus/minivan
Leblon has Nova Geraçao and Alliance – about 25mins via bus and walking
Lagoa has BTT and Raphael Abi-Rihan … Continue reading

Extending Your Tourist Visa in Brazil

Long-term tourists in Brazil will need to extend their visa if they wish to stay longer than 90 days. This process is not difficult, but can be tricky without a guide to take you through the various steps of the process.
Most international visitors get a 90-day visa upon entering Brazil. If you stay longer than this but do not extend the visa, you will be charge R$8/day for every day you overstay, up to a maximum of R$800. This fine can be paid upon leaving the country, but you also have the option to pay when you re-enter the country at a later time.

Bear in mind when you renew your visa, you get 90 days from the date of renewal. So if you renew it 3 weeks prior to expiry, you will get 180 days minus 3 weeks. Don’t leave it too late either! Make sure you renew it at least a few days prior to expiry in case there are any problems.
We do not recommend overstaying a visa to any of our guests, and due to … Continue reading

Jock Itch – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: local cure

Jock itch is no more comfortable in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil than any where else in the World. The difference is that here, in this hot and humid climate it is much more common of a nuisance. There is no better cure than prevention, done simply by staying clean and showered throughout your day, especially immediately after training. However if you do find yourself with an itch, there is a pharmacy right around the corner with an easy solution.

Hipoglos, a cream used for diaper rash on infants is inexpensive and does not expose your skin to harsh chemicals. The infant or children’s section of your neighbourhood pharmacy and even grocery store most likely will have this product in stock. As it can be an embarrassing or uncomfortable situation asking at the pharmacy if you do not know what you are looking for or how to say it, the word Hipoglos is pronounced (E-po-glos) in Rio de Janeiro. Hopefully you do not find yourself in need of the product but if you do, there is a solution!
